buy a can of freeze spray and after it starts acting up, start spraying
components very carefully (so you only hit one IC at a time), when the
problem dissapears, viola!

If it is in both axis then it is most likely an IC and not the actual
hall effect sensors. I woudl guess that you will find the cause to be
the ADC but that is just a guess, it could be an op-amp IC that is
common to both X and Y or even a voltage flucuation somewhere. The
freeze spray will tell for sure tho.
