Rip Off, being one of the very first slew of games was designed with only
3 intensities; off, low and high. As the monitor aged, the low intensity
dropped away from the high intensity such that if you had the brightness
pot set so the high intensity didn't burn the screen, the low was invisible;
if you made the low visible, the high was far too bright.
There was a service bulletin released from Cinematronics (which I saw in
an old Star Tech Journal) that said this could be solved by changing
the value of a certain resistor (or putting in an additional pot). Anybody
remember more?
