        True, although the hardware/software required to write to them are
fairly complex, aren't they? It's not just a matter of writing bytes to a RAM.

        Also, if you are looking for gameplay tweaks to Tempest, you need look
no further than the excellent Tempest 2000 PC/Console game, which has a bunch
of powerups such as the ability to jump (briefly leave the edge of the tube),
more powerful shots, and even a computer controlled helper which flies around
shooting enemies. Not to mention a cool techno sound track (one thing I really
miss when playing the original).
