Thanks for your input, I will investigate these options.

However, the watchdog is never triggered, so the program DOES visit address
5000h regularly (within the 80 ms)

But the tones are at the correct frequency, right?

Three off-beat and completely intriguing guesses:
1] Something causing contention on your memory bus
2] A large number of interrupts being generated by something (pokey?)
3] A different CPU that takes more clock cycles to do the same task.

(Does #3 actually exist?)
