Why is this under the tube neck ?

Just for the record, I would like to state that whoever decided to mount
that deflection transistor directly under the picture tube of the Wells
color vector should be shot.

There. I feel better now.

My Space Duel looses the left side of the screen intermitantly. It doesn't
seem to be heat related -- it will be gone for a few days, then come back
for a few days. My first thought was the deflection transistor, but it
seems strange that it would come and go -- dead transistors usually stay
dead. A diode test of that transistor however says it is OK, and the wires
and connections check out.

I'm all set to replace it, but have to wait until tomorrow to get a tube of
heat sink grease (I KNOW I have some around here someplace -- probably turn
up as soon as I get back). While I'm waiting I figured I'ld check the
collective wisdom to see if there is anything else I should check, or if
the deflection transistors can fail intermitantly.
