I think they use the programmable reference voltage as a means of varying
the size of the entire image on the screen. I was working on a _Gravitar_
board recently, trying to track down a video problem. During attract mode,
the _Gravitar_ logo pulses in and out -- like it's rushing towards you, then
backing off. When I removed the DAC that controls the reference voltage,
the logo remains one size constantly.
