Ah ha, you might have a point there - my grounding spring (well, it has
small springs either end but is a flat strip of metal) IS fairly rusty,
plus it has deposited rust on the back of the tube where it contacts it.
I'll try sanding the strip down and then cleaning the rust off the back of
the tube. If I can't clean the rust off the tube I'll try repositioning the
strip so it touches a clean strip of the tube.

I've never heard of aquadag before, but just looked it up and see that it
can deteriorate with time or *excessive* cleaning, which makes me think
that cleaning off the rust will also remove the aquadag in that area (if
the rust hasn't already removed it!). So I think a clean-up of the metal
strip and re-positioning it slightly above or below where it was is
probably the best bet.
