Good point, I meant to add that. Of course, if he turns up the brightness
and sees the correct vectors BUT with retrace lines everywhere then that's
a good indicator that the Z outputs are indeed dodgy.

Activity on the Z outputs can be easily verified with a multimeter set to
measure AC or, better still, a scope.
