3-in-1 can get sticky over time. However most hardware stores (and Radio
Shack) sell a pen-tube of teflon lubricant, which works great, wont disolve
plastic, or gum up over time.

My tempest had chatter when I first bought it. I cleaned the control with
coler TV tuner cleaner, lubed with the teflon, and almost 5 years later it's
still silent.
