Have you checked out some of the Pinball restoration sites for tips?
backglass damage an repair is an all too common part of pinball restoration.
There is a bunch of good tips here: http://www.marvin3m.com/fix.htm
One of the tapes that they sell has a good explanation of a couple of
methods.
I will track down which one if you need it.

Subject: VECTOR: Restoring artwork on glass?

I picked up a Gravitar machine the other day - need a lot of
restoration.

One of the most annoying things was the glass bezel art has had a large
chunk removed from it :( Does anyone have any thoughts on the best way
to sort this?

As you can see in grav_3 there's a great big hole in the art. A number
of ways to tackle it occur to me.

1: Make a reverse printout of the missing art - stick it to the front of
the glass then trace through the back and hand paint the missing bit.

2: Print the missing art out on high gloss photo paper and position it
in the space

3: remove all the art above the yellow line and print out the art on
glossy paper - mount it in the space.

4: remove all the art above the yellow line and repaint it using art
mask and an airbrush or spray.

Anyone got any other ideas or advice?
Anyone know what sort of paints to use and how to find matching colours?

Thanks.
