i have asteroids pcb's with lots of missing i.c.'s from the last owner - thats as bad as it gets i think.

NO....
on mylar and ceramic caps it's pf, and if you have 3 digits the 3rd is a multiplier like on resistors.
so it's probably 47pf and that makes sense if it's just to fine-tune something.
