Looking at the page again:

Looks like the circuit diagram lays out that the I/O card he's using is
running five 8-bit ports (makes sense...5 x 8 = 40 pins).

I found what looks like a decent six port I/O card here:

Comes with software and Linux drivers. Thoughts?
