I didn't socket the new chip (duh). It's possible I damaged something while
soldering, I'm not an expert although I have had good luck in the past.

I'll check the xtal when I get a chance.

did you damage any tracks when you pulled the 245?
did you use a good socket?

and check the 2 main problems i find - re-seat the cpu and check the
soldering on the crystal.

i have about 7 asteroids & similar style (millipede etc) pcb's - none of
them had an intact crystal when i got them.
they stick up with a great big invisible neon sign on them "break me!"
LOL
