Yep,

I have to get back on this. I just removed one of the deflection
transistors and the gel is REALLY dried out. And it's definitely not
forming a complete film any more....

Didn't know about the silicone pads (I'm getting old :D ). Gotta find
those ? Got any links ?

And grease IS really messy....and toxic to boot....

I've actualy always laughed about Arctic silver.....I've seen tests
where Arctic was compared to regular silicone gel and the whole
difference was 1 degree Celsius. (On a CPU/cooler combo) A waist of
money IMHO ! I've always used regular gel on my CPU/cooler combo's
and they never failed....there's a LOT of hyping in that area....

Something else:

I've found a broken trace on my SW Vector Generator PCB. It runs
between 3C-pin 15 and 5M-pin 13. Acc. to the schematics it carries
the Z0 signal. Is it possible that this causes the lines of (f.i.) he
letters and the Star Wars logo not to be drawn entirely correctly. I
see it has something to do with the blanking.

I'll just solder some wires up and connect to see the
difference :)......this is how it looked before....
