you need to be real carefull with proms in mame,
some 4bit proms have been dumped as 8bit with a leading or trailing nibble of crap by people using eprom readers & home-made adapters.

i tried to correct some once but some asshole on the "team" just rejected the change claiming some rubish about how "that's still how a lot of people dump them".
that may be true - that's how i used to before i had a decent programmer.
but i had the decency to take the junk out with a hex-editor before spreading them!

so if using mame prom-files, check the file-length against the prom before you commit the data with the program option.
it may save some proms from the bin!
