The DAG coating is resistive itself - The only reason I can think of to
bleed off slowly is that the coating in the immediate area of the anode
might decay from the current, but discharges like this have been done for
decades without much issue.

But, much like everything else, everyone has their own preference :)

Someone posted years ago on Vectorlist why you should bleed off the current
gently. I don't remember the specifics but it was a compelling arguement.
