Update: there is a donor board on its way to me, thanks.

Anyone care to weigh in on their preferred substitution for the original battery? A remote-mounted rechargeable(s) would require no circuitry modifications, while a non-recharging button cell would need a diode, correct? Original was a 3.6 volt.
