How does the Midway analog joystick work on a Kozmik Krooz'r? (schematic incl)

I'm trying to figure out the joystick on a Kozmik Krooz'r. It's an analog
type that slides a core through a choke. I have 5V & GND at pins 1 & 3.
I'd expect to see an analog siginal at 3B pin 4 & 4A pin 4 and a digital
count at outputs Y0-Y7 & X0-X7 but I can't seem to get any result. Any
ideas?
