OK, my bad. The discussion crossed slightly in to Tempest territory so I
inadvertently started thinking we were talking about the ALU on the mathbox.
I had learned plenty about the schematic (if not the operation) of the state
machine
and was certain that the address decoding was done discretely.
It's the subsequent games that are going to need this part replaced.

Now, if you could just put the VSM in a PLD....
