I don't know what it will do to the high volage if the HV diode shorts (can't be good I wouldn't think). Have you pulled out the diode to test with a meter? It should not show any reading for resistance or diode check if it is working or if it fails in an open state. If you do see resistance, then it certainly has died and I would worry about that HV transformer. If it does not however, you should be able to replace it fine to revive your game (i would think).

Does the tube heater glow? I recently worked on a g05 where the connectors were bad and it stopped the heater from getting its 6.3vac and thus no picture (i don't mean the sockets themselves, not the pins). Actually, I just have them installed at an angle right now.. I really should replace those connectors the next time I make a Bob order.
