The 406D has a diode built in that goes from the emitter to the collector.
You can use a 406 by itself, it will eventually burn up. But you should be
able to use it if you add an external diode.

After last week's postings on the BU406D, I stopped by Radio Shack and
ordered a few from RSU. First, they are not the D's. They are shipping
the BU406. Second, are the 406 and the 406D interchangeable? I seem to
remember they're not, but I couldn't find the specs to compare them both.
