Tesla coils??? OK, let's go back to the idea of using auto ignition coils!

Tesla coils are basically a resonant circuit that put out something close to a
sinewave (not to mention one hell of a lot of radio interference). An ignition
coil, as normally used, is run in a flyback mode.

A resonant coil (Tesla) putting out a sinewave would require the high voltage
rectifier to withstand over double the desired output. So for 25 kV out you
would need in excess of a 50 kV rectifier (unless you build a multiplier and use
lower voltages). A flyback circuit applies power to the primary which causes a
relatively small output (at the wrong polarity) at the secondary to cause a
magnetic buildup in the core. When the primary is then disconnected the
collapsing field give you your output voltages. The coil (when the magnetic
field tries to reverse) WOULD then give the rectifier a very high reverse
voltage if it weren't for the damper turning on at this point.

A Tesla coil is usually a pretty loosely coupled transformer, which isn't good
for hardly any current.
