Checking under the cup is just about the only way. Before that, everything
else is fairly well sealed. The problem is, anything that isn't completely
insulated at that voltage will arc to the side of the case, so there really
isn't any place else to check.

I haven't heard of the diode simply failing open. In almost any case, what
you get is a lowered HV, which results in a blooming effect on the screen.
If the diode were to fail such that is was open, I think it would result in
a noticeable catastrophic failure, such as breaking the thing in two.
