Actually, as I recall (my memory is quite poor, though) it was Tom Gomer who
first suggested this to me and he said he buys 2N3906 and uses it in all
MPSA06/2N3904/2N3906 applications. I don't think I'd be brave enough to try
a 2N3906 on the deflection board LV supply, though...
