coin lockouts are a pin, when the armature bends they make anoying buzzing
sounds.
when i was in the operator business we used to remove them all.

there are very few reasons for keeping them, gambling equipment needs them
for legal reasons, about a dozen ancient games need them because you cant
clock more than 10 credits but generally they are a wast of time and power.

if you suspect the lockouts why not confirm it by putting a temporary fuse
on the lockout coils.

Very good point on the fuse. I just don't know if I want to bother
connecting them again, they are really crunchy and seem pretty fried. (See follow up
below).
I remember working at a skateboard park in 1981-82 and watching the
main tech replace lockout coils on several coin doors. I really didn't know why
he was doing this at the time. I just started learning how to fix things
then (15-16 years old), and was more interested in "getting buttons adjusted
right so you could shoot qucker" and stuff like that.
Just to follow up, machine has been running fine for several hours
today, transformer is nice and cool with new rectifier diodes installed and coin
lockout coils disconnected.

Thank You,
