I had one board that had no "heartbeat" sound, and it turned out to be
C46 cap with a broken leg. Just guessing that if that cap, or whatever
the filter cap is in that same circut, was bad it may induce a buzz. If
you can have/can read the schems you should be able to track it down.
The board worked fine otherwise. And the speedup mod is usually a
clipped leg on an IC, like Alex says. The vectorlist.org archive knows
which chip it is. You could also make sure the crystal on the board is
11.96(?)Mhz. Or whatever the correct value is, I could be wrong on that.
