Yeah, I wavered back and forth a bit over the years. "Back in the day"
people were really worried about changing the original code since it might
(even subtly) alter gameplay, so I always did everything all in hardware
with no code patches if at all possible. (and pre-MAME that made things a
lot easier anyway!)

Later on, public opinion seemed to relax (probably just fewer "purists" in
the mix) and the niceties of new features and fixes in the code outweighed a
few clock cycles here and there. ;-) Patches and the like still have an
effect on things like Twin Galaxies high-score attempts (not allowed), but
how many people really try that anyway. ;-)
