Asteroids graphics problem

I've got an Asteroids board that seems to be fully working except that the
display looks like it's got slightly closed window blinds running through
it. You can see a picture of it here:

That is not the camera shaking or anything like that, that's a very good
picture of the problem. When the game is playing, as objects move about the
screen, it appears they go through a set of window blinds; i.e., all objects
have streaks of horizontal normal brightness, and streaks of horizontal dark
shades.
