I find if you use a NON-autoranging voltmeter to
check for ripple that they work very well. We use
an inexpensive yellow meter that has a big rotary
switch to select the voltage, resistance, etc.,
plus it has a separate switch to toggle between
DC and AC readings. This little meter is the one
we all use to check for ripple on linear power
supplies. You can easily see if you have
excessive ripple.

Autoranging meters are unable (in my experience)
to differentiate between a DC value and a lower
AC value and simply give up and provide you with
the DC (if higher) value.
