I've worked on cheap PC monitors where the HV diode was in something that
looked like aquarium air hose. You just need to find something that will
provide adequate insulation at 18kV or so, and make it extend past the ends
of the diode.

If you can get a decent solder connection to the diode ends, I'd just solder
it in place, and eliminate the socket (I think there was something written
up about Rick S. doing this on spies) since the socket is a common failure
point.
