As you've already heard by now, on Japanese transistors you
just put a "2S" on the front of the number. So you have a
2SC3956. That crosses to an NTE2521 or ECG2521.

MCM Electronics may be able to provide either the original
or replacement part (it's not in my catalog, but they may
have added the part since then). They are at 800-543-4330
