I have been operating several tempests and 2 warlords (uses the same
knobs) for several years now.. I've had the knobs break and I've bought
Tempest machines with broken knobs in the past (which was always replaced
with a skirted knob).

I dont see why Atari would just randomly buy a few hundred of the
non-skirted knobs some point into Tempest's production (at a much higher
cost) and put one on a machine here, one machine there.. that doenst make
sense.. Atari wouldn't randomly change the "feel" of the
game, players might not accept it and operators will not stand for that.
I've seen them break and the skirt breaks off clean from the bottom of the
knob, not the sides (in every case, that is the weak point), so it may
look like it was moulded that way. I dont doubt that broken knobs was an
occasional occurrance over the years so I can see how you got people to
confirm you..
