It *really* depends on when you buy the parts and how many you need-- they
seem to phase in and out of availability.

If you bought all the parts at the lowest price points (I've seen) the total
would be about $13 (no shipping/handling added in). If you bought all the
parts at the "wrong" time they add up to about $75.

For most people I'd think that kit would would be a pretty decent deal for
$35 or less. Not everyone is going to be willing to buy the minimum
quantity from a distributor of each of the hard-to-get parts-- and since the
best prices and availability probably aren't in the same disty you're paying
for shipping/handling over and over. I'd suspect that if you'd try to buy
just one set of the "best" priced parts from distribution you'd probably
spend ~$50. If you bought 500 kits worth at a time it'd probably be more
like $20/ea.
