( I don't know if the VL mail server is being weird to me or if it's my
@home mail server, but I just received Joel's message at 11:15pm and had
already received Clay's response to this email at 7:00pm - 4+ hours earlier!
Do do do do - do do do do )

Well, Joel & Clay, I've avoided doing side art for 2 reasons: size and cost.

As for size, I'm not sure how to get the art into my PC to then redraw it.
My friend has a "crawler" scanner that we've talked about using for this
sort of thing but we've never actually tried it. This thing is really cool -
You lay down a reference track and this scanner drives along the track
scanning in what's underneath. I think it'll do a 5' wide by any length
scan. The first problem is that we would have to have a machine (or
uninstalled sideart) to lay down and scan. The second problem is that this
scanner belongs to his work and I don't know how they would react to him
showing up one day with a dedicated SW upright in his pocket. But.
theoretically, it's possible.

The second and biggest problem is cost. I pay by the sq.-ft. A vid, approx.
3x6 in size would required (obviously) 18 sq. ft of art per side. Even if I
could work out an amazing deal with my printer and get it for $10 per sq. ft
(unheard of price, never happen) it would still be $180 per side. And that
wouldn't cover anything for my time to redraw it (many, many hours). I
figure in reality the cost would be double that.

So for small-run CPOs (the kind of weird stuff I seem to be gravitating
towards) this process is reasonable. I just can't see it being
cost-effective for side art.

If, however, someone wanted to fund the process of making true silk-screened
art, I would consider doing the graphics. Steve Gregory just did Ms. Pac
side art. I assume he had them silk-screened. He sells them for $150/pair.
So, let's say he makes a 50% mark-up. That means it would cost him $100 per
set (that seems awfully cheap). To get that kind of price, I bet he had to
order at least 100 sets.

So, does anyone want to put up $10,000 for a side art project? If so, LMK.
;-)
