The crap you are talking about is called MDF.
it is used a lot in europe, i dont know about the u.s.
(land of tree-killers!)

it may look like shit, but it is stronger than plywood,
i used to make control-panels out of it.

it is so dense that it can burn the blade on my jigsaw!!!

it is compressed wood-pulp, like 2/3 inch thick cardboard.
