Just to answer my own plea here, found a duff TIS98 in the Y pre-driver
stage.. dunno which one it was precisely as i removed and tested them all in
one go, and found a bad one with a collector-> emitter JD... duff..
I didn't have a TIS98 as a spare, or any of the known equivalents, so i
popped in a 2n4401 that matched the Hfe of the others pretty well and that
seems to allow it to run perfectly!
