HV Diode is always a safe bet -- is it just drifting off the top, or
possibly 'blooming' -- growing in all directions ?

The blooming occurrs when the HV diode fails and the HV becomes not so high.

Since your problem is thermal in nature (ie - as time passes, things get
hot), go to Radio Shack and buy a can of freeze spray (componant cooler they
may call it too). Turn on the machine and wait until it fails. Spray the
cooler on things one at a time until it starts working again. Bingo -- you
found what's bad.

I would start with the HV diode.
