Re: Replacement 19' Amplifone tube? tube Base Cap??

Michael,

It was my pleasure to respond! Your article is what
got me working on amplifones in the first place! :-)

I am by far no expert on the various tube scenarios,
but I have made one of the "hybrid" monitors using an
amplifone tube/yoke along with WG6100 boards. I have
also followed closely all the vectorlist posts on this
issue. I believe the common consensus is this: If
you are using a 19VLUP22 tube, it's best to use the
yoke out of a WG6100. Since both are 100 degree
deflection angle (non-standard for 19" tubes). Using
the yoke from an amplifone (a 90 degree yoke which is
pretty standard for 19") with the 19VLUP22 tube will
most likely make it extremely difficult to converge
the picture. But you're welcome to give it a try! ;-)
If this is the approach you want to take, I'll be
happy to send you a base cap to put on the 19VLUP22
tube. Just send me your address.

Oh, and if you can't get convergence right using the
amplifone yoke on the 19VLUP22, LMK and I might be
willing to trade you a WG6100 yoke for yours. I'll
have to take inventory of what yokes I have in the
garage.

What you might have been able to do was actually order
the proper amplifone tube replacement. The original
tube was usually Rauland M48AAWOOX (medium res), but
there were a few others. I believe someone posted the
cross that Richardson was selling was 19VATP22.
Problem was they wanted $185 for these, I believe.
Another much less expensive approach is to use a used
low res tube out of a raster monitor. Most rasters of
that era had the same pinout, base cap, and deflection
angle (90 degrees) as the amplifone. So the tubes
should mate up well with the amplifone yoke (also 90
degrees). The 19VLUP22 you have ordered is low res
anyway, so you aren't getting the benefits of the
original medium res amplifone tube with your approach.
What you could do is pull the tube out of a dead
Electrohome G07 or WG4900 and put your amplifone yoke
on it. I have seen this work quite nicely.

Lastly, I do know a place in Dallas that was selling a
rebuilt 19VATP22 (the original amplifone tube
replacement) for around $125. But I haven't been over
there in a year, nor have I actually tried using one
of their tubes before. I would have to buy it and
have it shipped to you, as I don't think they do
shipping. But I could check. I suppose I could also
test the tube in my Star Wars with a spare yoke I have
if you wish.

Oh, and with respect to your question about tube rebuilding,
only the guns are replaced during a rebuild. They won't (or can't)
replace the phosphur coating. But thankfully they won't rebuild a tube
with burn in, so it should appear new.

Good luck!
Noel
