Hmmm, no, just tried it and I certainly don't get that effect. Does yours
do that all the time or just at certain points in the game - for example,
when there are only a few asteroids left?

Now that I DO get! I'd never noticed it before - 'thanks' for pointing it
out to me, now it'll be bugging me. ;-)

Agreed, it's definitely the monitor.

To answer some other questions mentioned by others in relation to this topic:

My G05 has been completely re-capped except for one cap on the deflection
board, namely the 125v 45uf Low ESR radial cap (the silver one with the red
dot on the top indicating the positive lead). Think I'll try replacing that
later with the closest equivalent that I have been able to obtain, ie a
47uf 200v radial electrolytic

JB: the back of the monitor was cleaned about a month ago, but no work has
been done on it for some time (besides the re-capping about 3 months ago)

Here's another observation: in test mode, the diagonals on the right side
of the display look a little more 'blurred/smudged' than those on the left

Marc: Your comment re the transistors being out of spec is an interesting
one, as all my TIS98 transistors have been replaced with 2N4401's. One of
the original TIS98's was faulty and I couldn't at the time (4 months ago)
find any reasonably priced TIS98's in the UK, so I used a 2N4401. However,
I was also led to believe that these should be replaced in pairs if of a
different spec, and in the process of trying to find the bad original TIS98
I just replaced them all as I went.

Also Marc - you mention firing *down* the same line. Well, I get this
'recoil' effect when firing horizontally left, and also get it firing
horizontally right.

It's curious that Steve gets the 'recoil' problem when firing vertically
*or* horizontally and I only get it when firing horizontally

Should we manage to resolve this, it'll be something else for Tom to put in
his excellent B&W vector monitor FAQ. :)

Cheers,
Phil
