Oh yeah, to reply to myself,

I forgot the 4th solution which is Rodger Boots idea of using an ignition coil
to generate the high voltage. Regulation feedback would have to be accomplish
by a tap off the focus voltage resistor array that would have to be run directly
from the HV supply.

Maybe it could work...

It least it would run from 12v and would be pretty damned bullet proof.
