I always thought this was something used on purpose, to make sure the cup
sealed well.

Your other problems all sound like loose connections, especially since they
come and go. I had a similar problem with my Tempest monitor, which turned
out to be one of the wires going to the chasis transistor SOCKET had frayed,
and finally came loose.
