What you would get is a hell of a jolt if you touched the outside of the
tube....plus a poor beam drive, the intensity should be rather low...I'd
try it but I don't like risking my neck or the monitor electronics on a
flash-over.

Usually a bad focus is a result of a bad focus control...or the HV is not
stable, measure it with a HV meter at the anode connection under the rubber
cap.

I've seen a bunch of HV probes for fairly good prices on eBay lately, get
one with a built in meter...
