Its worth noting that the capacitor that sits on the negative rail has to be
fitted in reverse, so that the +ve is on the 0v/Gnd and the -ve is on the
negative line (b- is it ?)

Think of it like connecting two batteries in series..... but in this case
the 0v is in the middle of the two, look at the schematics.
