   Thanks for the response. It's been some time since I worked on this cage but I've finally gotten back to it. I've made the insulator from a piece of plastic of decent thickness - no problems there.

On the boots, can you recommend a brand of compound?

you can get those boots from an old tv set, or use high-voltage rubber compound.
