What I did back in the day was to just unscrew the backplane PCB from the
bottom of the cage and put the whole thing (backplane + cards - metal cage
assembly) on the bench. The backplane slots are all in just
passive/parallel, so you can mix and match boards in any order-- so put the
ones you want to probe on the outer edge. The boards will wobble a little,
but you can put some styrofoam or cardboard in between then to prevent any
shorts. Not recommended for long term use, but it was fine for debugging...
