First of all I am new to the list and just found it yesterday. So if I post
incorrectly please forgive me and nicely tell me what I did wrong and I
will be glad to try to follow any rules I am not now aware of.

I have been trying to get together with a friend to work as a team to repair
my 25" Amplifone monitor that has been dead ever since I picked up my Star
Wars cockpit 9 months ago. Tomorrow (Wednesday 3/6/02) is the day. Neither of
us has experience with Amplifone monitors. My friend however did repair his
Star Wars UR WG monitor as well as his Tempest WG monitor.

I have the following items on hand and ready to be used if needed:
1 New Wintron HV unit (purchased last August $190)
BU406D Yes there is a "D" on them Qty:27 just in case ;-)
120v AC fan (#CSA8038AC the one recommended in the Amplifone HV Guide)
Zanen cap kit (note: Not the upgrades recommended in the Amplifone HV Guide)
511-L7824CV STM voltage regulators (1.5A 24v) from Mouser Qty:5
511-L7924CV STM voltage regulators (1.5A 24v) from Mouser Qty:5
TO-3P mica insulators from Mouser (will probably have to trim these)
TO-220 mica insulators from Mouser
585-1N4001 rectifiers from Mouser (do-41 1A 50prv) Qty:10
599-SK3199 NPN AF MD PWR from Mouser Qty:2

I have a DMM.
I also have purchased a HV probe (used from a friend).
I DO NOT have a ringer to test the old "red is dead" HV unit.
I have a working SW boardset (tested in a friends UR) and I have the origional
1/2 working boardset that came in the cockpit (tested in a friends UR).

When I got the machine we turned it on and found no picture.
There is however "clicking" going on in the neck of the tube.
No LEDs are turned on on any of the monitor boards.
There is a small 1/8" or so phos burn in the center of the screen.
The HV unit is RED. The HV board and deflection board are Beige.

I was all set to do this tomorrow night when I found the vector list and
read a few posts I could find in the archive on the Amplifone. I started to
get really worried when I saw a few posts mentioning brand new Wintron HV
units that died when adjusting focus and brightness. Now I'm worried. What
if anything am I missing? I don't want to take any chances blowing up my
new HV unit. It would just about crush me to have that happen after finally
getting all worked up for this job. Should I just replace every single
component I listed above reguardless if those parts test good or bad?

I do not have a scope to check the wave form at the base of the BU406D as
listed in the Amplifone HV Guide by Michael Kelley 6/9/1999.

I also noticed some discussion on the topic of what the HV should be set at
for the 25" tube. 19,500 is the listed value in the HV Guide but I read the
start of some discussion that this was for the 19" and the 25" maybe should
be
different. Unfortunatly the Vector List archive doesn't seem to have anything
since mid 2001 so I may have missed the answer.

Any helpful information and encouragment is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Greg
