First you have to figure out if the degaussing coil is the problem or if
it's something else, like yoke settings. The easiest way to do that is
try degaussing with an external degaussing coil or anything else with a
large AC magnetic field like a soldering gun, bulk tape eraser, or even
the field from the motor of a hair drier or heat gun.

If external degaussing fixes your problem you can ignore everyone that
wants you to fiddle with the yoke and concentrate on IF your degaussing
coil isn't working and why not. I say IF because internal degaussing
coils aren't always strong enough to get the job done (I learned THAT
after a nearby lightening strike magnetized about a dozen games---the
internal coil had no effect but a professional external coil fixed them
right up).

If the picture is still bad after using an external coil THEN it's time
to adjust purity. But don't get ahead of yourself, make sure you're
degaussed first.
